Superhero Canvases - Round Two

After hanging up the Spider-Man canvas I made here, I decided it was too small and wanted to do a bigger Spider-Man canvas.  I found a 5 pack of 16x20 canvases at Michaels, marked down to $5.  One of canvases was torn, but the other four were perfect.  $1.25 per canvas, woot, woot!  Then I realized Parker still had plenty of wall space, so I made him a couple more superhero canvases, because I'm crazy and I don't have enough other stuff to do.

Superhero Canvases

So, here we go...round two of the superhero canvases.

4 perfect canvases for $5!

I used the Block Poster transfer technique as described in this post, for each of the canvases below.

Spider-Man #2

I used the Spider-Man logo from the new, upcoming 'The Amazing Spider-Man' movie and printed out the design using Block Poster.  I wasn't in the mood to hand paint the spider, it looked too tedious for me at that particular moment, so I decided I would cut out a template and spray paint the spider.

Steps:
1.  Paint entire canvas blue.
2.  Print out design.
3.  Tape the design to a piece of cardboard and cut out with and exacto knife.
4.  Place cardboard template on canvas and use a little painters tape to keep it in place.
5.  Spray light, even coats of spray paint.  I used three coats of red glossy spray paint.
6.  Remove template and let dry.

As you can see in the picture below, the lines aren't sharp and exact, but I think the hazy edges work great with this particular design.  I think it looks as cool as spider can look on a canvas.  I really like how it turned out.  I never in a million years, would have guessed that I would be painting a spider, to hang on walls in my house and thinking that is was pretty darn cool.

Flash

I gave Chris a few options of superheros I was considering painting and Flash was his choice.  (I was trying to pick logos that were fairly easy to paint.)  He used to pretend to be Flash when he was a kid, which made me smile.

Steps I used for Flash canvas:
1.  Print and cut out logo.
2.  Trace logo on canvas, with chalk.  Chalk is much easier to paint over than pencil.
3.  Paint outside of logo red.
4.  Cut out lightning bolt of logo and trace it on canvas, with chalk.
5.  Paint lightning bolt yellow and outside of bolt white
6.  Outline logo and bolt with black paint, to make logo stand out.

Sorry, I don't have more pictures of the steps, this was one of the last two canvases I was doing and I was ready to be done.

Green Lantern

I chose the Green Lantern, because I wanted to add another color to the mix and thought it would be fairly easy to do.  I was mistaken.  Since the Spider-Man canvas turned out so well, I thought I would try the template/spray paint technique again.  I thought a hazy effect would look good with this logo.  It didn't work out as well as I hoped and I had to touch up a lot by hand and make the circle look a little more like a circle (still not perfect, but better).  As you can tell by the pictures below, my template was far from perfect, which is easy to see with a circle.  I ended up using both techniques from the Spider-Man and Flash canvases, but if I had to do it over again I would just paint this one by hand.

Attach template to painted green canvas, with painters tape

Spray with white spray paint

And then fix your mistakes by hand.

I still have more superhero projects to do and share, but I'm done with the canvases.

The other night Parker asked me which superhero I was going to paint next.  Seriously kid, I just made you 6 superhero canvases!  I told him I was done with the superhero canvases.

Check out the other superhero projects I've done for Parker's room:

Happy Champagne Thursday!

Cheers!
